Eisenach Charterhouse

The Carthusian Monastery of Eisenach, once a significant spiritual hub, was located in the city of Eisenach in Thuringia. Although the original monastic complex is no longer fully preserved, the remaining structures and the current use of the grounds as the Kartausgarten bear witness to its long and eventful history.
History+
The foundation of the Carthusian monastery “Domus Vallis Sanctae Elisabeth” began in 1378 with the support of Landgraves Friedrich III, Wilhelm I, and Balthasar. The first monks arrived between 1378 and 1383 from the Carthusian Monastery of Erfurt. The complex was built outside Eisenach's city walls, south of the Frauentor, and officially incorporated into the Carthusian Order in 1382. In the 14th and 15th centuries, the monastery experienced its heyday, producing prominent scholastic scholars such as Johannes Indaginis and Heinrich Nemritz. The Reformation led to a split among the monks, with some embracing Martin Luther's teachings. During the “Eisenach Clergy Storm” in April 1525, the monastery was plundered and severely damaged, leading to its dissolution and confiscation by Elector Johann. After restoration work until 1537, the site initially served as a pleasure garden but was again devastated during the Thirty Years' War. From 1694, it was used as an orphanage and spinning house, later as a correctional and orphanage with a textile manufactory. Around 1790, it was transformed into a landscape garden, and after the orphanage closed in 1819, the buildings served as a penal and reformatory institution.
