Karmelitenkloster Sparneck
The former Carmelite Monastery Sparneck, a cultural monument in Bavaria, is located in the town of Hof. It was founded in the 15th century and dedicated to Saint Vitus before its dissolution during the Reformation.
History+
The foundation of Sparneck Monastery took place in 1455. It was endowed by Friedrich von Sparneck and was originally dedicated to Saint Vitus. After the founder's death in 1477, the monastery was completed by his son Christoph and inhabited by Carmelites. By the year 1534, fifteen priors of the monastery are known by name. In the course of the Reformation, the monastery fell into disrepair and was secularized in 1562. The former monastery church now forms the chancel of Sparneck's parish church St. Veit, which received a new nave and a stone tower in 1695.
