Karmelitenkloster Pößneck

The monastery was founded in 1315 by the Counts of Schwarzburg. It was the only monastery in Pößneck and played a central role in urban life. In 1428, the monastery provided the city with a water pipeline from the Haintal in exchange for a fee. The monastery's existence concluded in 1525 when Prior Heinrich Kaiser and nine monks handed over the complex to the city in exchange for an annual pension. However, two monks maintained their vows.

The monastery was situated in Pößneck, a town in the Saale-Orla district of Thuringia, Germany.

The former monastery church, built around 1400 as a simple hall building with a high gabled roof, underwent various uses after the dissolution of the monastery. Initially, it served as a storage facility for hops and grain. Later, a table for the Bilke game was set up there, earning it the name 'Bilke'. Following a renovation in 1870, the building housed a girls' school from 1871. Subsequently, it was used as a museum, for various schools, and as a wine wholesale business. Since 2006, the Bilke has been the home of the Pößneck City Library.
