Karmelitenkloster Marienau

The former Carmelite Monastery Marienau, also known as “to deme Ouhagen,” was once a significant religious center in the Hameln-Pyrmont region of Lower Saxony. Dedicated to the Mother of God, the complex bears witness to a long history and served the Counts of Spiegelberg as a spiritual site and burial place.
History+
The monastery's foundation is presumed to be around the year 1300, when the Counts of Spiegelberg, residing in Coppenbrügge, provided land for the Carmelites to build their monastery. An earlier chapel at this location had already received a papal letter of grace in 1298. Another documentary mention dates from 1312. The monastery church was consecrated in 1363. The convent typically housed 18 to 20 brothers, mostly from the surrounding areas. The monastery belonged to the Lower German monastic province. Throughout its history, the monastery was damaged several times by fires or acts of war, notably in 1432, 1441, and 1507. In the mid-14th century, Johannes von Hildesheim joined the order in Marienau, later became prior, and died in the monastery in 1375, where he was also buried. An epitaph of Countess Anna von Spiegelberg from 1504 is the only surviving testament to the old Carmelite monastery. In the 15th century, the monastery experienced a period of decline. Around 1550, the Spiegelbergs used the church in Coppenbrügge. In the mid-16th century, the monastery became Lutheran as part of the Reformation, and in 1565, it was seized by the prince and leased out, leading to the departure of the last brothers. By the end of the 16th century, it was described as “desolate.”
