Karmel Regina Martyrum

The Carmel Regina Martyrum was founded in 1982 by Carmelite nuns from the Heilig Blut convent in Dachau. The idea of establishing a monastery near the memorial church originated with Cardinal Julius Döpfner, but concrete steps were initiated by Cardinal Alfred Bengsch in 1979. The monastery was consecrated in 1984 by Cardinal Joachim Meisner. The nuns deliberately chose this location near the Plötzensee Memorial Site to offer intercessory prayer in the then-divided city of Berlin. For the construction of the monastery, existing community rooms of the memorial church were demolished, though the facade facing Heckerdamm was preserved. The crypt of the memorial church was extended with a chapel room, which serves the sisters for their daily masses and choral prayers.

The convent of Carmel Regina Martyrum leads a contemplative life in enclosure. To sustain themselves, the sisters operate a candle workshop and a monastery shop. Additionally, they are involved in pastoral care and spiritual guidance. The monastery buildings also provide rooms for individual visitors or groups, such as meditation groups. Since Pentecost 2026, four sisters from the Congregation of the Helpers have also occupied a separate floor of the monastery building, working in pastoral care, social work, and psychotherapy.
