Kapuzinerkloster Villingen

The monastery was founded in 1655, after the Villingen magistrate had already requested the provincial chapter of the Swiss Capuchin Province to establish a convent in 1653. Despite initial objections from the Franciscans, who voted against the settlement of a second mendicant order, construction was approved at the Niederes Tor. The foundation stone was laid on August 15, 1655. Due to financial constraints of the city, construction was not completed until 1663. The monastery church was consecrated on June 29, 1664, and dedicated to Saints Wendelin and Konrad. A special feature was the adoption of a statue of Saint Wendelin from the previously demolished Wendelin Chapel. In 1806, the monastery was finally dissolved during the secularization, after having been subject to dissolution plans in 1785 and 1802. In the interim, it served as a lazaret in 1814 during a typhus outbreak. The convent wing was demolished in the mid-19th century, while parts of the lay church, presbytery, and psalter choir were preserved and converted.

The Capuchin Monastery Villingen is located in the Schwarzwald-Baar district in Baden-Württemberg, Germany, within the present-day Villingen district of Villingen-Schwenningen.

The original monastery buildings were converted into a brewery in 1820, after the monastery's dissolution in 1806 and a brief period of use as a lazaret. The convent wing was later demolished. Today, the gutted and newly renovated buildings of the lay church, presbytery, and psalter choir are preserved and used for other purposes.
