Kapuzinerkloster Offenburg

The Capuchin Monastery of Offenburg, also known as the Old Capuchin Monastery, is a former religious institution of the Capuchin Order located in the city of Offenburg. Founded in the 17th century, it stands today as a significant historical structure, with parts utilized by the Grimmelshausen-Gymnasium and its church serving the Old Catholic community.
History+
After an initial request was denied in 1613, the city of Offenburg revived the project for a Capuchin monastery in 1634. Planning was approved in 1637, and the foundation stone was laid in 1640. Construction commenced in 1641 and was completed by 1645. The consecration, under the patronage of Apostle Matthias, took place in 1647. The monastery was primarily funded by Eucharius Harst, Emperor Ferdinand, and other benefactors. During the Thirty Years' War and the Dutch War, the monastery served as a headquarters. Notably, it was the only building in Offenburg to be spared during the city's destruction in the War of the Palatine Succession in 1689. The monastery was suppressed in 1807, though its official dissolution occurred in 1820.
