Kapuzinerkloster

The Capuchins were called to Munich around 1600 by Elector Maximilian I and established their first monastery outside the city walls of the time. This initial monastery was dissolved in 1802 during secularization, and its buildings were demolished. King Ludwig I facilitated the order's return to Munich in 1845. Between 1846 and 1856, the current four-winged monastery complex was built south of the Old Southern Cemetery. An existing chapel from 1702 was integrated into the east wing and expanded into the monastery church. Due to growing pastoral needs, the new St. Anton Church was erected west of the monastery between 1893 and 1895. Extensive renovations and structural alterations took place from 2006 to 2009.

The monastery is situated in Munich's Isarvorstadt district, south of Kapuzinerstraße and opposite the Old Southern Cemetery. To the east, the grounds extend to Isartalstraße.

The central monastery buildings, a two-story, four-winged complex with a gabled roof and a square inner courtyard, now house the Institute for Journalistic Training. A connecting building to St. Anton Church and a freestanding building serve the Isarvorstadt parish association as a parish hall and office. The Capuchins themselves reside in the former rectory. The Provincialate of the German Capuchin Province and other group rooms for the parish association are located in the southern outbuildings, known as the Remisen. Parts of the monastery wall are preserved along Isartalstraße and Kapuzinerstraße, and the Capuchin cemetery is situated between the east wing and the eastern wall.
