The Deanery - A Jewel of Ellwangen's History+
The Deanery, also known as the "Stiftsherrenhaus", is one of the most significant historic buildings in Ellwangen. Its rich history dates back to the Middle Ages and is closely intertwined with the development of the city.
Architectural Features+
The building is characterized by its impressive late Gothic architecture. Particularly striking are the stepped gable, the ornate bay window, and the richly decorated portal. Inside, historic ceiling paintings and wood paneling have been preserved, which bear witness to the former splendor of the building.
History of Use+
The Deanery has served various purposes throughout its history:
From Canon's Residence to Police Station
The Ellwangen Collegiate Chapter acquired the building in 1501. From 1830 it served as the seat of the Forestry Office, from 1970 as a police station, and today it stands empty.
Future Plans
Currently, concepts for a new use of the Deanery are being developed. The goal is to make the building accessible to the public again and to fill it with new life, while preserving its historical substance.
