Kanonissenstift Nottuln

The origins of Nottuln Abbey date back to approximately 860, likely founded by a nobleman named Liutbert. Initially operating as a convent for women following the Augustinian Rule, it transformed around 1493 into a secular collegiate church for noblewomen. This reorientation, effective from 1501, allowed only women of knightly lineage to be admitted, occupying 25 prebends. The collegiate church, dedicated to Saints Martin and Magnus, held extensive lands and tithe rights. In 1748, the convent buildings were destroyed by fire, with only the collegiate church being rebuilt. Following the Imperial Deputation Main Conclusion of 1803, the dissolution of the collegiate church was decided, ultimately carried out in 1811 by the Kingdom of Prussia.

The Canonesses' Collegiate Church of Nottuln was situated in the municipality of Nottuln, which belongs to the district of Coesfeld in North Rhine-Westphalia.

After the secularization in 1811, the possessions of the collegiate church passed to the Kingdom of Prussia. Of the former convent buildings, only the collegiate church survived the fire of 1748. Today, it serves as the parish church of St. Martinus and still houses two historical candelabras from the collegiate church era.
