Lindau Abbey

The monastery, dedicated to "Our Lady under the Linden Trees," was founded around 822 by Count Adelbert of Rhaetia. It is considered the origin of the city of Lindau. A crucial economic foundation for the city's development was the relocation of the monastery market from the mainland to the island around 1079. In the 15th century, the abbess of the abbey attained the status of an ecclesiastical Imperial Princess. Despite this dignity, she did not possess voting rights in the Imperial Diet due to the lack of a secular territory. While the city of Lindau became Protestant in 1528, the abbey remained Catholic thanks to the support of Emperor Charles V. In the course of secularization, the Canoness Abbey was dissolved in 1802 and initially fell to Prince Karl August von Bretzenheim.

The former Canoness Abbey is situated in Lindau on Lake Constance in Bavaria, Germany, at an elevation of approximately 405 meters above sea level.

After the dissolution of the abbey, the main building was used as a district administrative office. The abbey church, which partially burned down in 1922, now serves as a Catholic parish church.
