The origins of Heiningen Abbey date back to approximately 1000 AD, when it was founded as a collegiate church for canonesses. Throughout its history, it evolved into an Augustinian canonesses' foundation, dedicated to the Mother of God Mary and the Apostles Peter and Paul. This monastic community shaped the religious and cultural life in the surrounding area for centuries, before the abbey was dissolved in 1810 during the secularization.
