Jordan’s Castle
Jordan's Castle is a prominent ruin situated at the harbour of Ardglass in County Down, Northern Ireland. As one of formerly seven, now four surviving tower houses, it significantly shapes the townscape and bears witness to Ardglass' historical importance as an Anglo-Norman port.
History+
The origins of the first tower house on this site are attributed to John de Courcy. According to historical tradition, it served as King John I's lodging in 1210 during his campaign against Hugh de Lacy. The current appearance of Jordan's Castle dates back to a four-storey sandstone tower house built around 1450. It features characteristic projecting stair and latrine turrets on the north side, as well as machicolations. A significant episode in its history was the three-year siege by the O'Neills during the Tyrone Rebellion, during which Simon Jordan, a member of the then-owning family, held out in the tower until he was relieved by Lord Mountjoy in 1601. In 1911, the collector Francis Josef Biggar acquired the ruin and carried out extensive restoration work.
