Malteser Komturei

Hotel and restaurant

The former Johanniter settlement of Herrenstrunden, a historic monastery in Bergisch Gladbach, is a notable architectural monument in North Rhine-Westphalia. The complex, which now houses a hotel and restaurant, is distinguished by its long history and picturesque location by the Komturei-Teich.

History+

The origins of the settlement date back to the 13th century, when in 1224, Knight Dietrich von Dorendorf transferred the church in Herkenrath to the Johanniter hospital community in Jerusalem. The first documented mention of the Komturei in Herrenstrunden occurred in 1290. By 1328, the complex was already designated as an Order's Bailiwick, underscoring its significance as a central administrative hub for the order's province. The Komturei maintained this prominent position for several centuries. Following the Reformation, the Johanniters rebranded themselves as the Maltese around 1530. During the secularization, the order was dispossessed in 1806, and the properties subsequently passed into private hands.

Location+

The historic building is situated in the Herrenstrunden district of Bergisch Gladbach, a city within the Rheinisch-Bergischer Kreis in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany.

The Komturei's current appearance dates from the early 17th century. It is a two-story, plastered rubble stone building featuring a steep half-hip roof with five small dormers per side. A larger dormer with two windows and a slated gable, adorned with a white Maltese cross, characterizes the front facade. The main entrance is highlighted by a Baroque portal flanked by two columns, with the year 1684 inscribed on the lintel. The building is currently utilized as a hotel and restaurant and has been a protected monument since 1982.
