Johanniterkommende Wölchingen

The origins of the commandery date back to 1192, when Kraft I von Boxberg made donations of income and scattered possessions to the Order of St. John before embarking on a pilgrimage to the Holy Land. Initially, these assets were administered by the Johanniterkommende Würzburg. A court of the Johanniter in Wölchingen was first documented in 1239. Ten years later, in 1249, Konrad von Büchold appeared as a provisor, likely the first commander. In 1287, the order took over the patronage of the Wölchingen parish church, now known as the “Johanniterkirche”. The commandery experienced a significant expansion of its possessions when the brothers Kraft, Gerhard, and Konrad von Boxberg transferred their ancestral castle and the town of Boxberg to the Order of St. John. By 1313 at the latest, the seat of the commandery was relocated from Wölchingen to Boxberg.

The former Johanniterkommende Wölchingen is situated in Wölchingen, a district of Boxberg in the Main-Tauber-Kreis in Baden-Württemberg, Germany. The location is at an elevation of approximately 283 meters above sea level.

The former commandery is present today as a historical heritage, with the Johanniterkirche, once under the patronage of the order, continuing to serve as a testament to its past.
