Johanniterkommende Wiesenfeld

The existence of the Johanniterkommende Wiesenfeld is documented from before 1231. It was the first settlement of the Order of St. John in the area of what is now Kurhessen. The commandery was dissolved in 1527 or 1529 during the Reformation. After its dissolution, the complex was used as a pawned property and suffered considerable neglect. Later, it also served as a cellar for the Landgraves.

The former Johanniterkommende is located in the present-day village of Wiesenfeld, which belongs to the Waldeck-Frankenberg district in Hesse. Its location on a historic long-distance road highlights its former importance as a transport hub.

The early Gothic church, built between 1260 and 1270 from sandstone, can still be seen in the village today. It is a hall church with a single-nave choir and a five-story tower, which received a spire around 1900. The Hugenottenstraße, a current hiking route, passes through the site of the former commandery.
