Johanniterkommende Werben

The Johanniterkommende Werben was founded between 1200 and 1217, originating from an Ascanian endowment. A Komtur led the commandery, overseeing the maintenance of its buildings, the welfare of the order's priests, and the operation of three hospitals and a school. It also managed extensive estates acquired through donations and endowments. For over four decades, it was the sole institution of its kind in the Mark Brandenburg, considered the oldest sacred building in the area. In 1542, following the Reformation, Elector Joachim II of Brandenburg transferred the church to the city. From 1545, an evangelical Komtur presided over the commandery. During the Thirty Years' War, the buildings, including the Romanesque House, suffered considerable damage but were later rebuilt under the direction of Otto Christoph I von Rochow-Golzow. Following his death in 1659, his son Otto Christoph II succeeded him. In 1807, the commandery became part of the Kingdom of Westphalia. With the death of the last Komtur, Matthias von Jagow, in 1809/10, the Johanniterkommende Werben was secularized and transformed into a domain.

The monastery is situated in the town of Werben, part of Stendal in Saxony-Anhalt, Germany.
