Johanniterkommende Weißensee

The Johanniterkommende Weißensee was likely founded in the early 14th century. Throughout its history, the commandery underwent various administrative phases, including leases, direct order management, and temporary confiscations by regional rulers. It was not fully returned to the order until 1774. The final dissolution and secularization occurred in 1814, after which its revenues were nationalized. From 1815, the order's estate became a Prussian state domain and was subsequently divided into individual parcels and sold in 1828. In the 14th century, the Commandery of Weißensee was part of the Bailiwick of Thuringia, which, however, merged into the Bailiwick of Franconia by the end of the 15th century.

The former Johanniterkommende is situated in the town of Sömmerda in the federal state of Thuringia, Germany. The extensive area of the commandery was located in the inner city of Weißensee, opposite the church, bounded by Pfaffengasse to the west, Schäfergasse to the east, the city wall to the north, and Marktplatz and Johannesstraße to the south. The main building, today known as Pfaffenhof, is still located on Marktplatz.

Today, a portion of the former garden area of the commandery is occupied by the Chinese Garden Weißensee. The main building, the Pfaffenhof, can still be found on Marktplatz.
