Johanniterkommende St. Leonhard

St. Leonhard's Church, whose origins date back to the first half of the 12th century, formed the core of the later commandery. Although the earliest documentary mention of a Hospitaller commandery in Regensburg only occurred in 1276, it is presumed that the establishment originated in the 12th or 13th century through the takeover of an existing monastery or hospital. In the late Middle Ages, the commandery struggled with financial and personnel shortages, which temporarily led to its unification with the Hospitaller commandery of Altmühlmünster. During the Reformation in 1542, St. Leonhard's Church was used for Lutheran services but was later recatholicized. In the Thirty Years' War, particularly during the Swedish occupation of 1633/34, the commandery served as a hospital and plague infirmary and suffered considerable destruction. After the war, it briefly housed Carmelite friars and later served as a guesthouse for traveling Knights of Malta. The secularization of 1802/03 initially spared the knightly orders, but with Regensburg's transfer to the Kingdom of Bavaria in 1810, the Commandery of St. Leonhard was also dissolved and nationalized.

The former Commandery of St. Leonhard is located in the city of Regensburg, in the state of Bavaria, Germany. It is situated in the western part of the old town.

The current buildings of the former commandery serve as the location for a socio-pedagogical institution for children and young people.
