Johanniterkommende Rottweil

Teacher training and development seminar

The Johanniterkommende Rottweil, a historic monastery of the Order of St. John, was founded in the 13th century and shaped the religious and social life of the region for centuries. Of the original complex, only the impressive Commandery House remains today, bearing witness to the former importance of the order.

History+

The founding of the Johanniterkommende in Rottweil took place in 1247, with an earlier settlement of the order in Schwenningen presumed to be its origin. As early as 1274, the Johanniterkirche (Church of St. John) was mentioned in documents. Numerous donations and acquisitions, including extensive mill ownership, contributed to the rapid rise of the commandery. Under Commander Konrad von Egesheim (1274–1300) and later under Ulrich Bletz (1302–1313), the property holdings grew continuously. The commandery acquired patronage rights in Aldingen, Villingendorf, and Betzingen. In 1809, the Johanniterkommende Rottweil was finally dissolved.

Location+

The former Johanniterkommende is located in Rottweil, a city in Baden-Württemberg, Germany. It was strategically situated at the southeastern corner of the city, high above the Neckar valley. The grounds border the historic city wall and a western perimeter wall.

On site+

Of the former monastery complex, only the Commandery or Knight's House has been preserved today. This building is currently used as a seminar for the training and further education of teachers in Rottweil. A small asylum gate, slightly offset and renewed, is still visible.
