Johanniterkommende Zum Heiligen Grab

The first documented mention of the order's settlement dates to 1214. It was located northwest outside the city fortifications of Goslar. The patronage of the Holy Sepulchre referred to the order's origins in Jerusalem and served as a symbolic representation of the pilgrimage destination, which was unattainable for many at the time. The monastery church featured a central building designed as a replica of the Holy Sepulchre. The monastery complex, which extended to the present-day post office site, also included a hospital, in accordance with the order's mission. Even before the Reformation, the buildings were in a dilapidated state, and there were discussions with the city council about relocating the commandery. Part of the complex was already demolished in 1508. In 1527, during the threat to Goslar by Henry II of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel, the city council had the Holy Sepulchre monastery demolished for strategic defensive reasons. The Knights Hospitaller initially found refuge in the monastery of the Trollmönche before the convent was dissolved in the course of the Reformation. Over the centuries, the foundation remains became overgrown and buried until they were rediscovered, partially excavated, and conserved during the city's expansion in the imperial era. During this process, the tombstone of Johannes Engel, one of the last priors, was also found; it is now on display in the Imperial Palace.

Today, only minor remnants of the former monastery buildings remain on Am Heiligen Grabe street, serving as a reminder of the site's historical significance.
