The Johanniterkommende Burgsteinfurt was founded in the last quarter of the 12th century. It emerged in close proximity to Burg Steinfurt, even before an urban settlement developed. The noble lords Rudolf and Bernhard von Steinfurt were the founders and took the Order of St. John under their protection, providing the land for the first order house. In 1230, the Knights Hospitaller moved their seat to the Aahof, which remained the location until the monastery's dissolution. The commandery also received the patronage rights over the Große Kirche in Steinfurt, which included seven large farms. Over the centuries, other nobles supported the institution through donations and the transfer of patronage rights. From 1440 onwards, the Steinfurt Komtur usually also headed the Bailiwick of Westphalia. The commandery was secularized in 1806, thus ceasing to function as a monastery.
