Johanniterkapelle

The Johanniterkommende Bokelesch was likely founded in the last third of the 13th century. It was consecrated to Saint John the Baptist and Saint Anthony. The monastery was probably established as a double monastery by Johanniters from Burgsteinfurt and is first documented in a charter from 1319. Until 1587, the commandery was administered by members of the order. Following its dissolution as part of the secularization in 1587, the commandery remained under the Order of St. John until 1803, when it passed into the possession of Oldenburg through the Reichsdeputationshauptschluss. Its revenues were later used for Catholic church and school purposes in the Duchy of Oldenburg.

The former Johanniterkommende Bokelesch is located in Bokelesch/Strücklingen, a district of the present-day municipality of Saterland in the Cloppenburg district, Lower Saxony. The area is situated on the Sagter Ems.

Of the former monastic complex, only the monastery chapel is preserved today. The former commandery area encompassed 8000 hectares, including the present-day localities of Idafehn-Nord, Elisabethfehn-Nord, Ubbehausen, Osterhausen, and Roggenberg.
