The Commandery ("Kommende") was a branch of the spiritual knightly order of the Knights Hospitaller, primarily responsible as an administrative unit for the management of their estates, but also providing hospitality to the poor, pilgrims, and traveling members of the order.
The house is first mentioned in 1162. In 1743, a new building was erected. Today, the building serves as a meeting place. It is located - like the local history museum - in the center of Adenau, in the immediate vicinity of the town hall and district court, as well as the parish church of St. John.
