From the Bishop's Castle to the Johanniter Commandery
The former Johanniterkastell is now a farm complex. Parts of the outer walls of the square complex, built of bossage ashlar, especially in the east and south, and the chapter house on the west side are preserved. The castle was built in 1275 by the Johanniter Commander Heinrich von Boxberg in place of a castle belonging to the Bishop of Würzburg. In 1452, the castle was rebuilt. This was followed by destructions in the German Peasants' War and the Thirty Years' War. In 1728, the keep was demolished and the Commander's House was newly built. From 1806-14, the medieval substance of the castle was heavily altered by private use.
