The Johanniskloster was founded in 1254, when Prince Jaromar II of Rügen allocated land near the Strelasund to the Franciscans. The construction of the monastery was funded by donations, and by the turn of the 14th century, the building was largely complete. The monastery was dedicated to Saint John the Baptist, John the Evangelist, and Saint Francis. In 1372 and again in 1439, the Johanniskloster hosted the provincial chapter of the Saxon monastic province. With the
