Jesuitenresidenz Kastl

Following Elector Frederick V's defeat in 1620 and the loss of the Upper Palatinate to Maximilian of Bavaria, a re-Catholicization of the region began in 1624. As part of these measures, the Jesuits in Amberg were entrusted with pastoral care for Kastl, Pfaffenhofen, and Götzendorf on November 9, 1627. On January 9, 1636, the Bavarian Elector assigned them the Benedictine monastery of St. Petrus, which had been dissolved since the Reformation, as their residence. The Jesuits remained there until the suppression of their order in 1773. During their presence, a controversial renovation and a baroque re-furnishing of the monastery church took place in 1715.

The Jesuit Residence Kastl is situated in the Amberg-Sulzbach region of Bavaria, Germany, at an elevation of approx. 426 m above sea level.

The complex, once a monastery castle, served as a residence and place of activity for the Jesuits until the dissolution of their order. The monastery church underwent a baroque transformation under their direction.
