Jesuitenkolleg Mindelheim

A Jesuit settlement was established in 1618 in the former Augustinian monastery, after Maximilian I of Bavaria acquired the Mindelheim lordship. In 1622, this settlement was elevated to a college. Extensive new construction began in the mid-1620s. The southern part of the east wing, including the sacristy, Ignatius Chapel, and former oratory, was built between 1627 and 1629 under Johannes Holl. The west wing was constructed in 1630/1631 by Albert Vaironi according to plans by Johannes Holl, while the east wing with its transverse section was completed by Michael Thumb between 1668 and 1671. The Jesuits managed the college until the suppression of their order in 1773. After secularization, the complex served as an electoral hunting lodge from 1777 to 1781 and then as the seat of a Commandery of the Order of Malta until 1808. In 1820, the college was dissolved and privatized. Since 1980, the property has been owned by the Unterallgäu district. The current subsidiary church of Mariä Verkündigung, formerly the monastery church, features a choir from the mid-15th century and a nave by Johannes Holl from 1625/1626, with later alterations in the 18th century.

The Jesuit College is located in Mindelheim, a town in the Bavarian Unterallgäu region of Germany.

Today, the historic building complex houses various museums. In 1986, the Mindelheim Textile Museum opened, based on a donation from Hilda Sandtner. The Swabian Nativity Museum was established on the first floor in 1989, and since 1994, a branch of the Archaeological State Collection has been located on the second floor of the east wing.
