The Jesuitenhof in Dirmstein, Rhineland-Palatinate, is a former Jesuit monastery that now houses a winery. This listed building ensemble, which also includes a garden pavilion in the surrounding vineyards, is characterized by its historical significance and picturesque location.

History+

The origins of the property date back to 1500, when a monastery was founded on this site. A few decades later, it came into the possession of the Jesuit Order, founded in 1534. Parts of the outbuildings and ancillary buildings, as well as the main house with its stair tower, date from the Renaissance period of the 16th century. From the mid-16th century, and documented until 1705/06, the Jesuits served as the Catholic parish priest of the village. During the Palatinate War of Succession in 1689, the Jesuitenhof suffered considerable damage, which was only provisionally repaired for over 200 years. The current walled gate system and the yellow plaster of the main house date from the 18th century.

Location+

The Jesuitenhof is located in Dirmstein, a municipality in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany, at an elevation of approximately 106 m above sea level. The property is situated in the north of the village center, surrounded by vineyards of the Jesuitenhofgarten single vineyard site.

On site+

Today, the Jesuitenhof operates as a winery. The yellow plastered main house with its hip roof and stair tower, as well as the ancillary and outbuildings, characterize its appearance. A historic garden pavilion, also a listed building, is part of the ensemble. This was reopened in 2016 after extensive restoration work.
