Mädelhofen Castle
The hunting lodge Mädlehofen was intended to be built as a Prince-Bishop's hunting lodge, but it was never completed.
Southeast of Mädlehofen, near today's Helmstadt junction of the Bundesautobahn 3 and Bundesstraße 468, the hunting lodge Mädlehofen was planned to be built. It was designed by Balthasar Neumann in 1724 for the Würzburg Prince-Bishop Johann Philipp Franz von Schönborn.
The plan was to erect a two-story building with a mansard hip roof and an oval central risalit. On August 18, 1724, after the death of the builder Schönborn, construction work was halted, and the shell was demolished down to the foundations in 1725.
During a routine helicopter flight by the highway police, the forgotten area was accidentally rediscovered on June 13, 1990, and archaeologically evaluated based on the aerial photographs taken. Local farmers had previously always reported finding stones. After securing the site, the land became state property. The foundations of the former hunting lodge were restored and are now under monument protection.
