Grunewald Castle
Grunewald Hunting Lodge, Berlin's oldest preserved palace, is picturesquely situated on the southeastern shore of Grunewaldsee. Originally conceived as a moated castle, it now impresses as a museum with a rich collection and stands as a testament to early Renaissance architecture in the region.
History+
The palace was built in 1542/1543 by order of the Brandenburg Elector Joachim II Hector and was named "Zum grünen Wald" (To the Green Forest), which later gave the entire Grunewald its name. It is believed that the master builder Caspar Theiss was responsible for the plans. Between 1705 and 1708, the building underwent renovations under Frederick I, which added Baroque elements. Since 1932, the hunting lodge has served as a museum and is managed by the Prussian Palaces and Gardens Foundation Berlin-Brandenburg.

Today, Grunewald Hunting Lodge houses a museum. Visitors can admire works by Lucas Cranach the Elder and his son, as well as Dutch and German paintings from the 15th to the 19th century. Berlin's only surviving Renaissance hall can also be found here. A collection of hunting equipment has been exhibited in an outbuilding since 1977.
