Grünau Castle

Grünau Hunting Lodge is located about seven kilometers east of Neuburg an der Donau in the largest contiguous floodplain forest area in Central Europe.

The Wittelsbach Count Palatine Ottheinrich had the hunting lodge built for his wife Susanna of Bavaria starting in 1530. Initially, the residential tower-like core building was erected, which was later supplemented by various wings around a large courtyard. Inside the core building, the room structure from the time of construction is still largely preserved. The room functions of the dining hall, two stately apartments consisting of a living room and bedrooms and a shared adjoining room (studiolo, cabinet), as well as other rooms under the roof, are still clearly discernible. The extensive wall paintings still preserved there were mostly begun by Jörg Breu the Younger and later supplemented.

Originally, Grünau was built as a moated castle, but the moats have since silted up. Today, the hunting lodge is owned by the Wittelsbach Compensation Fund.
