Institut Herz Jesu der Englischen Fräulein, Günzburg

The Institute of the English Ladies was founded in 1756 by Mrs. von Bertognani in Günzburg, which at that time belonged to the Margraviate of Burgau. From its inception, the order focused entirely on school service and the education of girls. Following the Peace of Pressburg in 1806, both the city and the monastery became Bavarian. Unlike other religious institutions, the Institute was not dissolved during the secularization, although the admission of new members was prohibited between 1807 and 1817. In 1825, the sisters moved into the buildings of a former Franciscan convent on Frauenplatz. This convent had been founded in 1433 by Günzburg citizens Margarethe Böck and Margarethe Bader and dissolved by Emperor Joseph II in 1782. The sisters operated the Maria-Ward-Gymnasium and the Maria-Ward-Realschule in Günzburg until 1983.

The monastery is located in the city of Günzburg, within the Bavarian administrative region of Swabia, Germany.

The former school buildings of the Institute bear witness to a long tradition of education. Today, the monastery remains a place of historical significance and continues to function as an institute of the English Ladies.
