The origins of the Imperial Palace of Ingelheim date back to the second half of the 8th century. Charlemagne had a palace built here, which he first used in 774 on his return from conquering the Lombards. A longer stay in the winter of 787/788, during which an important imperial assembly took place, underscores the early significance of the site. Under his son Louis the Pious, the palace experienced a heyday with numerous visits, imperial assemblies, and receptions for envoys. Under the Ottonians, particularly Otto I and Otto III, Ingelheim was also frequently visited and was the scene of important synods. Archaeological finds confirm the continuous use and architectural development of the complex until the 11th century.
