Hutten Castle (Altengronau)

The Huttenburg Altengronau is a lowland castle at about 235 m above sea level in the Altengronau district of the municipality of Sinntal in the Main-Kinzig district in Hesse.

The Huttenburg Altengronau was built by Alexander von Hutten between 1548 and 1552 as a Renaissance castle. Material from the destroyed second Hutten defensive complex in Altengronau was probably used for the construction, for which no confirmed archaeological findings exist, but whose location is presumed to be in the upper village ("Alter Keller"). Adam von Hutten last inhabited the castle; with his death on September 4, 1627, the line of the von Hutten zu Gronau founded by Alexander died out in the male line. In 1648, the possessions of the Lords von Hutten zu Gronau, destroyed in the Thirty Years' War, were sold by Philipp Daniel von Hutten zu Sannerz to Amalie Elisabeth von Hanau-Münzenberg, Landgravine of Hesse-Kassel. From this point on, the Huttenburg served as a granary for collecting and storing the tithe. The castle ruin was rebuilt in 1752 and provided with a contemporary mansard roof. During the construction of the Flieden–Gemünden railway line in the second half of the 19th century, the castle served as a hospital for the railway workers. From 1875 to 1960, it was used as a schoolhouse.

The Huttenburg Altengronau is a three-story stone building with two round corner towers. No longer visible today is the defensive wall with the two corner towers that enclosed the rectangular castle area.
