Huis Bergh, an impressive castle in ’s-Heerenberg in the Dutch province of Gelderland, is one of the largest and most historically significant buildings in the country. It was once the ancestral seat of the Counts of Bergh and is distinguished by its long and eventful history.
History+
The origins of Huis Bergh likely date back to the early 12th century, when a wooden residential tower was built on an artificial mound on a marsh island. In the early 13th century, this wooden tower was replaced by a round tower made of tufa stone, remnants of which are still preserved in the walls of the main castle. The main buildings visible today largely date from the 14th to 17th centuries. During the Eighty Years' War, Huis Bergh suffered significant damage multiple times. A devastating fire in 1735 destroyed large parts of the complex. In 1912, the textile manufacturer and art collector Jan Herman van Heek acquired the castle. Another fire in 1939 necessitated extensive renovation work, which was carried out from 1939 to 1941.
