Hospitium Berching

The founding of the hospitium in Berching can be traced back to a donation by the wine merchant and mayor Johann Georg Pettenkhover. In 1721, the complex was built outside the city on the Sulz for six Capuchin friars. Just one year later, at the behest of the Prince-Bishop of Eichstätt, Johann Anton I. Knebel von Katzenelnbogen, it was elevated to a full monastery, capable of accommodating eleven to twelve priests and four to five lay brothers. The order was also granted permission to operate a brewery. In 1738, the Franciscans took over the establishment from the Capuchins.

Construction of the monastery church of St. Trinitas began under the Capuchins with the laying of the foundation stone on August 5, 1722. The year 1723 is carved into the lintel of the porch. The church, which the Franciscans took over along with the monastery, featured a roof turret. Its interior furnishings largely dated from the 19th century.

The former hospitium is situated in Berching, a town in the German federal state of Bavaria.

The former monastery church is now desacralized and is used as a parish and youth center under the name “Pettenkoferhaus.”
