Hauenstein Manor
Hauenstein Farm is a large estate in the Aschaffenburg district in the Bavarian Spessart. It is located in the Kahlgrund between the Krombach district of Oberschur and the market town of Mömbris. Not far from the current large farm lies the Hauenstein castle ruin.
Name+
The name Hauenstein refers to the "Haubergswirtschaft" (coppice forestry) practiced in this area in earlier times. This is a type of ancient rotational farming, where forest and arable farming alternated on the same piece of land at regular intervals.
In 1841, the farm – partly built from stones of the Hauenstein castle ruin, not far from the current Hauenstein Farm – was constructed by Baron Waitz v. Eschen, with a former operational area of approximately 340 ha. After a relatively short existence, the huge areas of the estate were divided into small parcels and sold.
The farm complex itself was divided in 1896. The current owned area per side of the farm is approximately 20 ha. The farm is now a listed building. During the Second World War, vacant parts of the building had to serve as a military training camp and as accommodation for refugees. The farm has retained its agricultural origin to this day.
