Wellingsbüttel Manor

The origins of the Wellingsbüttel estate date back to 1296. From 1412, it was owned by the Archbishops of Bremen, who frequently mortgaged it to Hamburg canons. In 1643, the estate passed as a male fief to Dietrich Reinkingk, the chancellor of the last Archbishop of Bremen. Under his stewardship, Wellingsbüttel gained a unique constitutional status as an immediate imperial estate. Around 1750, Theobald von Kurtzrock commissioned the construction of the current manor house, followed by the gatehouse in 1757, designed by Georg Greggenhofer. In the early 19th century, the estate was owned by Duke Friedrich Karl Ludwig of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Beck, an ancestor of many European royal houses. Later, under the prominent Hamburg citizens Jauch, Wellingsbüttel evolved into a significant Hanseatic country seat and social hub. After World War I, the estate came into the possession of the City of Hamburg and was incorporated in 1937.

Wellingsbüttel Manor House is located in Hamburg-Wellingsbüttel, within the Wandsbek district of the city of Hamburg, Germany, at an elevation of approximately 19 m above sea level.

Today, Wellingsbüttel Manor House serves as a retirement home. The listed ensemble, which also includes the gatehouse, is situated amidst the Alster Valley nature reserve. The gatehouse houses the Alstertal Museum and functions as a cultural meeting point.
