Veerßen Manor

The manor house Veerßen was built in 1701-08 on the walls of an old moated castle.

From the Moated Castle to the Manor House

The history of the Veerßen manor house goes back to the Middle Ages. Originally, there was a moated castle at this location, which served to secure the ford over the Ilmenau. The first documentary mention of the castle dates back to the 13th century.

Over the centuries, the castle changed hands several times and was repeatedly rebuilt and expanded. In the 17th century, the castle lost its military significance and was increasingly used as a residential building.

In 1701, the then owner, Georg von Ompteda, decided to demolish the dilapidated castle and build a new manor house on its foundations. The construction work lasted until 1708 and created the building that still stands today.

The Owners of the Manor House

The Veerßen manor house remained in the possession of the von Ompteda family until the mid-19th century. Afterwards, it changed hands several times. Among the well-known owners were the von der Wense family and the von Meding family.

In 1980, the manor house was acquired by the city of Uelzen and extensively renovated. Since then, it has been used for cultural events and as a venue for weddings and other celebrations.

The Veerßen manor house is a two-story brick building with a hipped roof. The facade is structured by pilasters and cornices. The main entrance is emphasized by a portal with a balcony.

Inside, the manor house has numerous historical rooms, including a large hall, a dining room and several salons. The rooms are furnished with antique furniture and paintings and convey an impression of the former splendor of the manor house.

Today, the Veerßen manor house is a popular venue for cultural events such as concerts, readings and exhibitions. It is also used as a venue for weddings, family celebrations and company events.

The manor house is surrounded by a spacious park that invites you to stroll and relax. The park also houses a historic ice cellar and a small chapel.
