Testorf Manor
The Testorf Estate in Wangels in eastern Schleswig-Holstein was founded in 1460 by the long-established Buchwaldt family. The estate complex with its manor house, gatehouse, and outbuildings is a typical example of 18th-century Schleswig-Holstein estate architecture.
Since the Middle Ages, the area of the present-day estate was owned by the monastery in Cismar. In 1460, it came into the possession of the Buchwaldt family, who built a castle-like, fortified manor house here around 1482. The actual estate farming began in 1565, at which time the complex passed to the Blome family. Around 1606, a new manor house was built on the other side of the courtyard, which was destroyed in 1644 during the Thirty Years' War. The Blomes left the estate in 1681, after which a period of constantly changing owners began. The estate was subsequently owned by, among others, the House of Hesse-Kassel, the Reventlow family, and the Brockdorffs. In the course of the 18th century, a new manor house was erected, and the large gatehouse also dates from this period. In 1879, the estate passed to the Abercron family, originally from Scotland, who also acquired the neighboring Ehlerstorf estate in 1900. The estate is still managed today.
Buildings+
The estate complex is located on a courtyard island, now only partially surrounded by moats, which is divided into two spatial units by the gatehouse and the farm buildings in the front area and the adjoining manor house with outbuildings. The island and the immediate surroundings were designed as a Baroque garden in the 18th century, parts of which are still preserved in their structure today, such as the rectangular layout of the complex and some lime avenues. From 1870 onwards, a large landscape park with sightlines extending to the neighboring Hansühn was created.
The Manor House
The current manor house dates from 1774, with vaults from the first house of 1482 still preserved in the cellar. The two-story building features a high mansard roof and was significantly rebuilt and extended in 1902; the tower-like annex on the courtyard side dates from this period. To the left and right of the courtyard side are two freestanding wing buildings from 1771 and 1772, which were probably erected by Georg Greggenhofer. They served as a cavalier's house and a coach horse stable.
The Gatehouse
The gatehouse from 1769 was built by Greggenhofer on the site of the Blome manor house from 1606. It is a wide, symmetrical building modeled after the gatehouse at Hasselburg Estate. The central part is designed like a pavilion and is flanked on the left and right by two stable wings. The courtyard side of the gatehouse is surrounded by two mighty farm buildings, of which the large barn essentially dates from around 1600. The cow house located to the north was renovated in 1888.
