Röhrentrup Manor

On Klüter territory lies the Röhrentrup Estate, a former farmer's castle, which, unlike other farmer's castles, was completely surrounded by water. It can be found on the northern slope of the Mönkeberg in the source area of the Ötternbach, hidden between groups of trees and shrubs. The residential building and the farm buildings, dating from the 19th century, are grouped on three sides around a courtyard. In front of the entrance lies a pond, in the middle of which the rather inconspicuous farmer's castle rises. Such farmer's castles were built in the Middle Ages to bring people, animals, and supplies to safety in times of danger. Almost thirty of these complexes were demonstrably in Lippe, of which five are still preserved today. This defensible farmer's castle presumably originated as early as the 12th century. In the estate building, the Lippe sovereigns reached an agreement with the city of Lemgo on matters of faith in the Röhrentrup Recess at the beginning of the 17th century.
