Oppershausen Manor

Oppershausen Castle is a former moated castle, later a manor house resembling a castle, located in Oppershausen (Hauptstraße 22) in the Unstrut-Hainich district (Thuringia).

Heinrich von Oprechtshusen is considered the earliest verifiable local nobleman in Oppershausen; his name was mentioned in 1222. In 1287, an office holder (advocatius) acted on behalf of the Archbishop of Mainz in Ophershusen. In 1323, B. v. Mulhusen owned allod in Opprechtishusen.

The moated castle, of which foundation remnants and parts of the southern moat are still preserved today, was built in 1395 by Richard von Sebecke, also known as Seebach, presumably succeeding a High Medieval predecessor. In 1754, the manor house, which still stands today, was built on the castle grounds. The former residential tower was demolished in 1973 due to dilapidation.

After the "castle" and knight's estate were owned by the Lords of Seebach from 1408 to 1895, and by Anton Knöpfel and his son from 1918, the latter were dispossessed without compensation in 1945, and the property became communal. After the reunification, the manor house, popularly known as "Schloss" (castle), was renovated and now houses apartments and the municipal administration.
