Mårbacka Mansion

The origins of Mårbacka date back to the 17th century when a farm was located on the site. The building where Selma Lagerlöf was born was erected in the 1790s by her great-grandfather, Pastor Wennerwik. It was a modest wooden structure, yet it already featured stately elements such as a central entrance and a veranda. For three generations, Mårbacka served as a parsonage, with the daughters of the pastors traditionally marrying other pastors. Selma Lagerlöf's grandmother, Lisa Maja Wennerwik, broke with this tradition and married the regimental clerk Daniel Lagerlöf. Her son, Lieutenant Erik Gustaf Lagerlöf, the writer's father, continued farming but encountered financial difficulties. After his death in 1885, the family could not resolve the problems, and Mårbacka had to be sold in 1890. Selma Lagerlöf, who had grown up there, bought the manor back on New Year's Day 1908. With the money from her Nobel Prize in Literature, she also acquired the associated land in 1910 and doubled the property by 1914. Between 1921 and 1923, she undertook extensive renovations, transforming Mårbacka into a representative stone manor in the Carolingian historicist style. Selma Lagerlöf continued farming at Mårbacka and considered the estate a central life's work. In her will, she stipulated that Mårbacka should be preserved unchanged as a museum after her death.

Mårbacka Manor is located in Mårbacka, in the municipality of Sunne in the Värmland district, Sweden. It is situated at an elevation of approximately 73 meters above sea level.

Today, Mårbacka is a museum and one of Sweden's most visited attractions. It is presented in the form Selma Lagerlöf gave it through her renovations, preserving the writer's legacy for posterity.
