Louisenlund Manor

The Neoclassical Louisenlund Castle on the Große Breite of the Schlei, situated in an extensive English park, was built between 1772 and 1776 as the summer residence of Landgrave Carl von Hessen. The architect Hermann von Motz significantly expanded it around 1790, adding an orangery among other things. The building acquired its current appearance under the Dukes of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksburg.

Today, Louisenlund, as the Louisenlund Foundation, is a boarding school, founded in 1949 as a state-recognized grammar school under private sponsorship, and has produced well-known sailors. Despite multiple renovations, some special features have been preserved inside, such as the stucco ceilings in the manor house.

West of the estate, the remains of a 17th-century Meierhof (farmstead) with outbuildings from the 18th century are still preserved today.
