Gammel Estrup Manor

The origins of Gammel Estrup date back to the 12th century, when it was first mentioned as a manorial seat. For a long time, it was owned by the Church of Auning before belonging to the noble Skeel family until 1929. Its strategic position on an old fortification, surrounded by marshlands, made it almost impregnable in earlier times. The west wing of the main building was largely constructed in the 16th century, while the remaining parts were added in the 17th century. In the 18th century, Gammel Estrup was one of the largest estates in the country.

Gammel Estrup Manor is located in Auning, in the Norddjurs municipality, within the Midtjylland (Central Jutland) region in Denmark. It is situated at an elevation of approximately 9 m above sea level.

Today, Gammel Estrup houses two museums: the Jutland Manor Museum in the historic main building, which has existed since 1930, and the Danish Agricultural Museum in the former farm buildings. Visitors can explore the history of Danish agriculture and the life of the nobility across different eras. The 18th-century orangery buildings, an orchard with old apple varieties, and a botanical garden with medicinal, spice, and utility plants complement the offerings.
