Carlsburg Manor (Nordhausen-Sundhausen)

First, the Lords of Sundhausen and the Lords of Büren ruled over Sundhausen. In 1652, Dietrich von Carlsburg acquired the then castle, which was its first mention. However, the overlords were the Kings of Prussia and the Counts of Stolberg-Stolberg.

A simple manor house was built on the site of the old castle complex. Ernst Friedrich von Carlsburg had established a valuable library; his family inhabited the estate until approximately 1770 and then moved to their possessions in Lusatia. From 1870-1904, under Alfred von Carlsburg, a conversion and extension into a small castle took place. Various outbuildings were erected or also converted, which completely changed the appearance of the old complex.

In 1905, the company "Familie G. Schreiber & Sohn" acquired the complex, renovated it, and further converted it. The Carlsburg served as the Schreiber family's residence until 1945. During this time, the park was dendrologically expanded. With the land reform, the Schreiber company was expropriated.

During the GDR era, the Karlsburg – now spelled with a “K” – was first used as a retirement and nursing home “Anna Seghers” and later as a home for disabled children and young people. After 1990, further renovation and refurbishment measures took place (modern heating system, new windows, interior work), but the home was closed a few years later despite many protests from parents and educators. Since then, the buildings stood empty and were sold in the summer of 2008.
