Braunenbruch Manor (Detmold)

The history of the Braunenbruch manor dates back to the middle of the 14th century. At that time, the Detmold castellan Alrad the Black, with the consent of the nobleman Otto zur Lippe, built a fortified house outside the city gates. Braunenbruch is probably the oldest seat of the lower Lippe landed gentry. The castellan's descendants kept the estate in their possession for almost 400 years until the family died out with the last descendant, the Brunswick cavalry captain Adolf Viktor Schwarz von Braunenbruch, in 1716. The von Scheele family acquired the estate from his estate but sold it again as early as 1752. The owner of the complex now became bailiff Henrich Conrad Niemeyer from Sternberg. Philip August Merckel acquired the estate from his son in 1802. In 1967, Braunenbruch was sold by the Merckel family to the city of Detmold, which subsequently resold it.

Buildings and Facilities
After the previous buildings of a medieval moated castle and a manor house built in the 18th century, the estate in the 19th century consisted of the manor house newly built in 1842, two flanking large farm buildings, a water mill on the Knochenbach, and a mausoleum of the Merckel family beyond the stream in the adjoining woodland to the southeast. Except for the manor house, which was renovated in the 1980s, and the eastern farm building, most of the buildings have been demolished. The stone bridge over the Knochenbach was built in 1822.
