Biberhof Manor
The Biberhofgut Manor, also known as Bibermühle, is an imposing estate in the canton of Schaffhausen, Switzerland. Originally conceived as a castle-like country estate with a mill, it combines historical architecture with a picturesque location at the confluence of the Biber River and the Rhine.
History+
The main building of the Biberhofgut was constructed in 1528, with the main portal bearing the year 1529. Ten years after its construction, in 1538, the Lords of Klingenberg sold the entire estate, including the presumably older mill, to the city of Stein am Rhein. It remained in municipal ownership for centuries until it was sold to a private individual in 1875. Since 1993, the property has housed the Bibermühle Antiquarian Bookshop, founded by Heribert Tenschert. A stable and barn building north of the main house was built in 1677, as evidenced by an inscription on a sandstone tablet. After a fire in 1920, the eastern stepped gable was not restored. In the 18th century, a mansard house was added south of the mill, and its style was adopted during the construction of the Sulzer Villa in 1918.
Location+
The Biberhofgut Manor is located in Ramsen, in the canton of Schaffhausen, Switzerland, at an elevation of approximately 396 meters above sea level. It is strategically situated at the confluence of the Biber River and the Rhine.
