Herforder Münster

Evangelical-Lutheran parish church

The Herford Minster, a significant cathedral in North Rhine-Westphalia, stands as a prominent example of Romanesque and Gothic architecture. As the oldest and largest church in the city of Herford, it bears witness to a long and rich history.

History+

The origins of Herford Minster trace back to a predecessor building founded as St. Mary's Church. After the relics of Saint Pusinna were transferred to Herford in 860, the church received a dual patronage as St. Mary and Pusinna. Today's Evangelical-Lutheran parish church was once the church of the Herford women's collegiate foundation, which was imperial immediate from the 12th century until 1802. The construction of the late Romanesque hall church likely took place between 1220 and 1250 and is considered the first large-scale hall church in Germany. Originally a three-aisled building with chancel flank towers and an apse, it was expanded around 1340 with the Krämerchor (merchants' choir) and ossuary located southwest of the transept. In the early 15th century, the chancel was extended by one bay and given a straight end. The western two-tower facade was built between 1270 and 1280, with only the south tower being completed above the ridge height in 1490. After secularization, the state of North Rhine-Westphalia became responsible for its structural maintenance. During World War II, the Minster suffered air pressure damage and was designated a protected monument in 1981.
